All the Blue Gems Steven Universe Steven Universe Background Redo
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the finale of Steven Universe Future, which aired Friday on Cartoon Network
Steven Universe Future just concluded the long-running animated franchise in the most emotional way possible, allowing Steven the chance to bid farewell to all of the friends he has made across the course of the series. Here are all the references to the history of Steven Universe that appear in the final episode of the series, "The Future."
CONNIE, GREG, SADIE, AND LARS
Although the Crystal Gems are mostly made up of Gems, there are still a handful of humans that they've called on as allies over the years. Even apart from the rest of the citizens of Beach City, some like Steven's father Greg, his romantic interest Connie and his friends Sadie and Lars got a special mention in the finale to the franchise. While Steven makes his way across the United States to find himself, he announces his intentions to visit Connie (who will be making her way across the country on a college tour), Sadie (who is on tour with the band she's formed with Shep) and Lars (who returned to space with the rest of the Off-Color Gems).
Steven also makes sure to leave Greg a present in the form of his room inside the Crystal Temple. Despite becoming fabulously wealthy thanks to the residuals from a song he recorded in his youth, Greg had still not procured an actual home for himself and was still living in his van. Although Greg is initially reluctant to take the spot, he eventually relents when he realizes how comfortable having an actual bed will be for once. He even describes it as Greg finally "settling down," suggesting he'll have a closer relationship with the Gems going forward.
PERIDOT
Peridot was introduced as a major threat to the Crystal Gems. Arriving on Earth alongside Jasper to inspect the progress of the Cluster at the center of the planet, she became trapped on the surface when her ship was destroyed. She spent most of the second season of the show as an antagonist, trying to find a way to reach Yellow Diamond. But thanks largely to the efforts of Steven, Peridot ended up finding an appreciation for Earth. She eventually befriended the other Crystal Gems (forging a surprisingly strong friendship with Amethyst) and announced herself as a rebel at the conclusion of the season when she decided to help protect the Earth.
Peridot and Steven have remained incredibly close ever since, with Peridot always bringing up how Steven tried to help her when he really didn't have to. Knowing Steven has helped make her a better person, and their friendship was one of his relationships that was most affirmed during Steven Universe Future. As a reminder of their connection, Steven leaves Peridot one of his shirts that he wore when she first befriended him and the lesson to be the "Steven" she wants in the world.
LAPIS
Lapis was the first new Gem that Steven was introduced to after spending so much of his life with just the Crystal Gems. Freeing her from a mirror prison, Lapis initially lashed out at Steven and the others. But Steven was able to get through to her and even heal her, restoring her full powers. When she was forced to return to Earth by Jasper and Peridot, she did everything she could to warn Steven. After spending a period trapped in a fusion with Jasper, she was eventually freed and given a place to live at Peridot at Greg's farm. There, she developed a deep appreciation for art (or, as Lapis and Peridot call it, Meep Morp) and used it as a means to express herself and confront her former pains.
Steven constantly remained one of the core people in Lapis' life. When Lapis left Earth out of fear for what will happen when the Diamonds reach the planet, Steven was the only one that could make her consider returning to Earth. She eventually overcame her fears and fought against the Diamonds along with the Crystal Gems. Steven Universe Future showed Lapis and her ability to try and overcome her anger and remain in control, partly through her art. Thusly, Steven leaves her with a massive assortment of crayons and paints for her future projects - which she says will including a painting of him.
BISMUTH
Bismuth was secretly a member of the Crystal Gems, who fought alongside Pearl and Rose against the Diamond armies that initially invaded Earth. But as revealed in the episode "Bismuth", she eventually developed a weapon called the Breaking Point that specifically designed towards shattering diamonds. Rose - secretly Pink Diamond - ended up confronting her over this and was forced to poof Bismuth and trap her in a bubble. Steven released her but was forced to trap her in another bubble when she attacked him in a rage. After learning the truth about Rose, Steven released Bismuth and explained everything - finding peace with the old soldier.
Bismuth rejoined the Crystal Gems just in time for Ruby and Saphire's wedding and became a dedicated ally to Steven in the final stretch of episodes of the original series. Bismuth has since been helping construct Little Homeworld and has even developed something of romantic interest in Pearl. As a final goodbye to Bismuth and to honor her for her service in the original war, Steven gives her the original Crystal Gem flag that he'd found in Rose's dimension.
AMETHYST
Amethyst was one of the core Crystal Gems, but less of a guardian for Steven then Pearl or Garnet. She was introduced as the most immature member of the Crystal Gems, and the most intrigued by human culture. This extended to Amethyst watching television and playing videogames with Steven, giving her the vibe of being more of a big sister than a parent for the young boy. As Steven grew, his discovery of who he was and transformation into a mature young man helped push her into accepting herself along the way. She's even proven to be, as Steven once described her in the fifth season, the most mature of the Crystal Gems.
Amethyst has been a dedicated teacher at the Little Homeworld school (along with other members of the Crystal Gems), helping guide the Gems on Earth find their place in the world. Before Steven leaves Beach City, he leaves behind the videogames they used to play together. While Amethyst initially says that she can't wait to delete Steven's save files and start her own game, Amethyst later tearfully confessed that she would never delete any of the games he'd played.
PEARL
Pearl has always been the most controlling of Steven's guardians. Often shown to be the most nervous about Steven's safety and well-being. She's also been dominated by her long-running torch for Rose, who she'd once served when she was Pink Diamond. Much of Pearl's growth has been about overcoming the idea that she has to be defined by someone else and to move on and do things for herself. She's grown to appreciate herself, with music as a common way for Pearl to express herself. Steven Universe: The Movie even revealed that Pearl had begun to learn how to play the bass guitar, giving her another outlet.
Steven Universe Future has confirmed that Pearl has found a real place of inner peace. On top of making more and more human friends (notably at the roller rink), she's also become an assistant for Bismuth at her forge in Little Homeworld. As a sign of their long friendship and the importance music has for both of them, Steven leaves Pearl his ukelele that he played in his youth. Although she initially seems content with the present, she reveals during Steven's departure that she never wants to play another instrument that's not the ukelele.
GARNET
Garnet has always been the unofficial leader of the Crystal Gems, her calm and collected nature helping compliment her extraordinary power. In reality, she was a fusion of Ruby and Saphire, two supposedly different Gems who ended up falling in love and joining Rose Quartz in her bid to liberate Earth. Over the course of the series, Steven has become one of the biggest cheerleaders for their relationship, helping them through tough times. When the pair were even married towards the conclusion of the fifth season, Steven served as their wedding planner and even conducted the ceremony himself.
Garnet is shown at one point being a couple's therapist for a pair of humans in Little Homeworld, and - like the other people that Steven has helped over the years - seems to be more at peace with herself then she's even been before. Steven gives her the planning book he'd made for their wedding, and Garnet later reveals the reason she, Pearl, and Amethyst had seemed cool over his departure was in an attempt to keep from making him feel guilty and accidentally cause him to not move on without them. But Garnet makes sure that Steven knows he can always come back to the others. She also reveals how meaningful the wedding planning book is to her, and reveals she's already been planning over three hundred different ones.
